SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Tiffany Strickland won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while Mike Nielson claimed the men's 5,000 and Josh Sides won the shot put to lead Utah State at the Cal Poly Track and Field Invitational here Saturday. The eight-team meet, USU's first outdoor meet of the season, included Brigham Young, Fresno State and Washington among others.
Strickland led a one-two finish for the Aggies in the steeplechase as she ran the event in 11:05.44 to beat teammate Emily Prestwich, who finished in 11:17.46.
Carol Cabanillas finished second in the 5,000-meters in 17:40.70, while Kelli Burton posted a 16.00 shot put mark for second place and threw the hammer 51.56 for a third-place finish in that event.
Sides won the men's shot put with a mark of 18.26 and then placed fourth in the hammer (61.32) and ninth in the discus (48.70). Nielson's time of 14:19.00 in the 5,000 was good enough for first place ahead of teammate Trevor Ball, who was clocked at 14:26.79.
Ryan Bruhn placed second in the hammer at 62.37, while also finishing eighth in the discus at 49.48.
