Logan Hammer Named America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State track and field junior Logan Hammer has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Jan. 12. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
 
With their sponsorship of the student-athlete of the week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.
 
Hammer broke the school record in the indoor pole vault at the BYU Invitational this past weekend, winning the competition with a clearance of 5.50 meters (18-0.5). The Nampa, Idaho, product bested the previous school record of 5.45 meters (17-10.5) set by Lance White in 1994 and matched by Mark Calvin in 1998. Hammer's performance ranks as the third-best in the nation this season.

Next week, Utah State will travel north to Pocatello, Idaho, on Thursday and Friday, January 16-17, for the Snake River Open. This will be the first of three scheduled trips to Idaho State during the indoor season

Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week included:
MEN'S BASKETBALL – Fifth-year guard Ian Martinez (Heredia, Costa Rica) helped Utah State to a 2-0 Mountain West record last week with an 85-78 win at San José State and an 81-79 home win against Boise State. Against the Spartans, Martinez scored 14 points and added five rebounds and four assists. And against the Broncos, he scored 18 points, to go along with three rebounds and three assists, and hit the game-winning 3-pointer and foul shot in the final seconds. For the week, Martinez averaged 16.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, while shooting 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from the floor, 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from 3-point range and 80.0 percent (4-of-5) at the free throw line.
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL – Junior guard Mia Tarver (Salt Lake City, Utah) led Utah State last week in a pair of Mountain West losses to Boise State (82-77) and at Nevada (78-69). Against the Broncos, she scored 14 points and added three assists, three rebounds and three steals. And against the Wolf Pack, she scored a career-high 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, while making six of her seven free throws. She also had four rebounds, two steals and one assist in the game. For the week, Tarver averaged 16.5 points and shot 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from the field and 80.0 percent (12-of-15) from the free throw line.
 
GYMNASTICS – Sophomore Nyla Morabito (Welland, Ontario, Canada) won the floor routine and finished tied for second on vault in Utah State's 195.000-194.150 home loss to Southern Utah last weekend. Morabito scored a season-high 9.825 on vault and tied her season-high with a 9.850 on floor to lead the Aggies on both events.
 
WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD – Freshman Abbie Scott (Rigby, Idaho) took third place in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 3.90 meters (12-9.5) this past weekend at the BYU Invitational. Her performance, in just her second collegiate meet, is tied for the third-best in school history.
