Final Stats

EUGENE, Ore. - Utah State soccer allowed only one goal to the University of Oregon, but it was would prove to be one too many as the Aggies fell to the Ducks, 1-0 in Eugene on Friday night. With the loss, Utah State falls to 1-2, while Oregon evens out its record at 1-1 with the win.

"We just didn't generate enough offense," USU head coach Heather Cairns said. "Our defense was much more organized and our possessions were better. They were able to create more crosses and were in a more dangerous position and ready to score."

Oregon took the early lead at the 18:32 mark of the first half. The Ducks Allison Newton scored her first goal of the season from five-yards out. Mercedes Walters and Teresa Bowns were both credited with assists on the play. It would be the only goal scored in the match.

"It was a really good play by them," Cairns said of the only goal of the match. "They drove it across the box. Smarty (Lindsey Smart) was defending, but it was a well delivered ball from them, good offensive play."

In the first half the Duck defense was very stingy, allowing only three shots by Erin Salmon, Stefani Shiozaki and Chandra Salmon. Oregon was very active in the first 45 minutes with 11shots. The Ducks ended the match with 17 shots to the Aggies five.

The Aggies welcomed back senior forward Candice Clark who missed the first two matches because of injury. Freshman goalkeeper Molli Merrill saw her first action this season, starting the second half for the Aggies for senior Ali Griffin.

USU will now travel to Corvallis to take on Oregon State on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 12 p.m. (MT). OSU is 1-1 this season with a win against in-state rival Portland State and a loss on Friday to Boston College. Sunday will be the first meeting between USU and Oregon State.

Following the Oregon trip the Aggies return home for a pair of home matches. Utah State will face Texas State on Sept. 4 at 4 p.m. at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field before facing Northern Colorado on Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. Admission to all Utah State home soccer matches is free.
