LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer won its second-straight match against a team from Texas with a 2-0 shut out over the University of Texas at San Antonio on Thursday on Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field. With the win Utah State evens out its record at 4-4-1, while UTSA falls to 3-5 with the loss. This was the first-ever meeting between the Aggies and the Roadrunners.

The first half ended with a 0-0 tie, despite the fact that the Aggie out shot the Roadrunners, 11-1. Junior Lindsey Smart who started at midfield was among the Aggie leaders in shots in the first half with two shots. Senior Kiersten Nilsson also had two shots in the first period.

"These are two of the best games that our midfield has had back-to-back," USU head coach Heather Cairns said. "I think that they figured out how to dictate play and dictate our style. They really just started to find that groove. We rotated six midfield players in. And no matter which ones we had in there, they all looked like they were working together."

Despite the shots being closer in the second half, 8-5, Utah State pulled away getting two balls in the back of the net. Junior Lindsey Smart scored the game-winning goal in the 58th minute off the cross from freshman Summer Tillotson. Smart launched the deep shot from 25-yards for her second goal of the season. The assist was Tillotson's first collegiate assist. Tillotson is the fourth newcomer this season to score a point along with fellow freshmen Chandra Salmon and Shantel Flanary and junior transfer Andrea Seledee.

Selledee's first Aggie assist came in the 81st minute when she got the ball to sophomore Lauren Hansen. Hansen, from 15 yards out, scored on an empty net after Roadrunner goalkeeper Nicoline Joergensen was pulled out of the goal. With the two points, Hansen is now tied for sixth all-time in the USU record books with 29 points. She is tied with Marnie Bartelson who played from 1997-2000. She is also tied for fifth in goals scored with 14 with USU great Charity Weston (2003-2006).

"I think this gives us confidence that when we play hard and work for each other we can play really well," Smart said. "We know that Long Beach State is going to be a really, really good team. We just have to come out and play our hardest."

Utah State will remain at home for a non-conference match with Long Beach State. The Aggies will face the 49ers on Sept. 21 at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field. Long Beach State holds a 6-2 series lead over the Aggies. Admission to Utah State soccer matches is free.
