Logan, Utah - LOGAN, Utah - Utah State soccer fired 21 shots at Texas State but were unable to get the ball in the back of the net as the Aggies played the Bobcats to a 0-0 double overtime tie on Thursday at Chuck and Glora Bell Soccer Field. With the tie, the Aggies move to 1-3-1 this season, while the Bobcats are now 2-1-1. Utah State is winless in its last three matches.
Both teams came out aggressive with the Bobcats taking the five first-half shots and the Aggies taking seven. Utah State senior goalkeeper Ali Griffin was solid the entire match, making five saves in 110:00 minutes.
At the 48:08 mark of the match, a penalty kick was called against the Bobcats. Junior defender Lindsey Smart took the penalty kick for the Aggies and shot the ball to the lower right where Texas State goalkeeper Mandi Mawyer made a tough save to preserve the 0-0 score. Despite taking eight shots in the second half, the Aggies were not able to capitalize and regulation ended with the same 0-0 score.
"It was really frustrating because I think we out-possessed them," Smart said. "It came down to one thing. We couldn't get the ball in the back of the net. I think the defenders did their job; they kept them off the board."
With just under two minutes remaining in regulation, a red card was called on Mawyer, leaving the Bobcats a man down for the remainder of the match.
"Soccer is a cruel game," USU head coach Heather Cairns said. "That is one of the frustrating things. It doesn't matter how many possessions you have. It doesn't matter how many shots you have. It only matters how many goals you have."
Senior Candice Clark, junior Erin Salmon, freshman Shantel Flanary and Smart all had three shots for the Aggies. Sophomore Stefani Shiozaki also added two shots for USU against Texas State. Junior Andrea Seledee had a strong performance against her former team with one shot on goal. Seledee transferred from Texas State after two seasons as a Bobcat.
The Aggies remain at home for a match against Northern Colorado on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. Admission to all home USU soccer matches is free. After the match against UNC, Utah State will prepare for its instate battle with Utah on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Salt Lake City.
