LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's men's and women's cross country teams will face the nation's best at the Indiana State-hosted Pre-National Invitational, on Saturday, Oct. 15, in Terre Haute, Ind.
The events, this year sponsored by adidas and the Terre Haute Convention and Visitor's Bureau, will be held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. The men's eight-kilometer Blue Race will begin at 9 a.m. (MT), while the women's six-kilometer Blue Race will start at 9:35 a.m. (MT). Aggie entrants will also participate in the men's and women's Open Races at 11:30 a.m. (MT) and 12:05 p.m. (MT), respectively.
Utah State veteran head coach Gregg Gensel is eager to see how his athletes do on a national stage.
"We're looking forward to the pre-national meet," said Gensel. "This meet gives an opportunity to our student-athletes to improve on what they've done, while also letting them see the national championship course."
Utah State's men will be accompanied at the national meet by eight teams that are ranked in the USTFCCCA national poll. The ranked opponents include Oregon (4th), Arkansas (5th), Colorado (6th), Portland (7th), UTEP (12th), Indiana (13th), Eastern Kentucky (15th) and Michigan (20th).
On the women's side, USU will also be joined by eight programs ranked in the national poll, including Colorado (2nd), Portland (5th), Stanford (7th), Oregon (9th), Arkansas (12th), Michigan (13th), Eastern Michigan (16th) and Virginia (22nd).
Also, Utah State will face a total of 11 opponents who are ranked in the Mountain Region. The Aggie men will compete against No. 6 Colorado, No. 12 UTEP, Air Force, Utah Valley and Wyoming, while USU's women will compete against six regionally-ranked opponents, including No. 2 Colorado, Air Force, Colorado State, Montana State, UTEP and Nevada.
Last weekend, Utah State hosted the Steve T. Reeder Memorial as the Aggie men placed second out of three teams with 50 points, while the women also finished second out of four teams with 46 points.
The MW Championships will be hosted by Boise State on Friday, Oct. 28, at Falcon Crest Golf Club in Kuna, Idaho. The Aggie women finished sixth with 144 points at last year's championships, while the men finished eighth with 220 points.
The NCAA Mountain Region Championships will be hosted by Utah State and will be held in Logan, Utah, on Friday Nov. 11, eight days before the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 19.
