TOWSON, Md. – Utah State soccer ended it's weekend by picking up its first win of the season as the Aggies defeated Towson, 3-1, Sunday.
Among the Aggies' three goals were two that were the first of the respective players' careers. Redshirt senior midfielder
Erin Rickenbach scored the first goal of the day for the first of her career, while freshman forward
Marli Niederhauser recorded the first goal of her collegiate career later in the match.
With the win, Utah State improves to 1-2-0 on the season, while Towson falls to 0-5-1.
Towson controlled much of the offense through the first half, keeping play in its attacking third. The Tigers would finish the half with nine shots to the Aggies' five, but Utah State was first to find the back of the net. In the 41st minute, Rickenbach gained control and took a shot over the hands and head of the Towson goalkeeper to score.
The pace of the match slowed on both sides as the second half got underway, with just three total shots being taken over the first 20 minutes. Unfortunately, an Aggie handball in the penalty box gave Towson an opportunity for a penalty kick. The Tigers were able to convert the shot, tying the score at one in the 67th minute.
The tied score didn't last long, as the Aggies were able to respond and regain the lead in the 75th minute. After back-to-back near shots from USU, sophomore midfielder
Ashley Cardozo found the ball and was able to dribble around the Towson defense and past the keeper for her first goal of the season.
The Aggies continued to gain momentum as the clock wound down, extending their lead in the 82nd minute. A long cross from redshirt senior midfielder
Danielle Nowers found Niederhauser with lots of space to work with. She was then able to work around the keeper to score and give Utah State its 3-1 lead. The Tigers took another three shots before the end of the match, but could not mount the comeback.
On the day, Towson out-shot Utah State, 16-14, but the Aggies had the advantage in shots on goal, 8-6. Senior goalkeeper
Grace McGuire played the full match in the net, tallying five saves.
Utah State will remain on the road for its sole match next week, but will play closer to home. The Aggies will play at regional rival Idaho State on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m.
