LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball earned two of the three Mountain West weekly awards as senior catcher
Gabriella Jimenez was named the Player of the Week and freshman pitcher
Mia Reynolds was named Freshman of the Week.
The duo helped lead the Aggies to their third Mountain West series victory of the season as USU went 2-1 against Nevada last week (9-10 (8), 6-5, 8-7).
Jimenez led Utah State with four home runs, eight RBIs, seven hits, five runs, 20 total bases and a slugging percentage of 1.667. Defensively, she led the Aggies with 18 putouts and six assists. For the week, Jimenez batted .583 (7-of-12) at the plate.
In Game 1, Jimenez was 2-for-4 at the plate with one home run and posted three RBIs. In Game 2, Jimenez was 2-for-4 at the plate while posting three RBIs. Her hits included a double and the game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh. In the final game of the series, Jimenez went 3-for-4 at the plate, including two solo home runs. She again posted a game-tying home run with a solo shot to right center in the bottom of the sixth.
Jimenez also threw out Nevada's Chelie Senini, who was second in the nation in stolen bases, on two different steal attempts. Senini came into the game a perfect 36-for-36 in stolen bases in 2022.
Reynolds appeared in all three games for Utah State against Nevada, including two starts, and earned the victory in the Aggies' 8-7 victory in Game 3. She led the USU pitching staff with 16 strikeouts, including a career-high seven Ks in Game 1. Reynold pitched 16.0 of Utah State's 22.0 innings against the Wolf Pack, recording 299 pitches in the three-game series
In Game 1 against the Wolf Pack, Reynolds pitched for 4.0 innings, recording a career-high seven strikeouts. She only allowed one run in the game and threw 76 pitches in the outing. In Game 2 against Nevada, Reynolds made the start and pitched for 5.0 innings, recording four strikeouts and threw 93 pitches.
Reynolds made the start in the circle for the Aggies in Game 3 before being relieved in the top of the fifth. After Nevada started to make a comeback in the frame, Reynolds reentered the game to earn her eighth win of the season. The freshman recorded five strikeouts and three walks in her 7.0 innings of work on Saturday. She finished the day having thrown 130 pitches.
Utah State (23-18, 9-3 Mountain West) next travels to Pocatello, Idaho, to take on Idaho State (19-20, 3-6 Big Sky) on Tuesday, April 19, at 4 p.m., before resuming conference play at UNLV (30-10, 8-4 MW), on Friday, April 22, Saturday, April 23, and Sunday, April 24.
