LOGAN, Utah – Utah State graduate quarterback
Logan Bonner and graduate running back
Calvin Tyler Jr. have both been named to the 2022 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, it was announced Tuesday.
Bonner and Tyler are among 63 players, including six from the Mountain West, on the watch list. The duo is also two of four players from the Beehive State on the list, joining BYU's Keanu Hill and Utah's Brant Kuithe.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School, and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or currently playing at a four-year Division I institution in Texas.
During the 2021 campaign, Bonner set five single-season school records with 3,628 yards passing, 36 touchdown passes, four touchdown passes in three-straight games, four touchdown passes in six games in a season and 2.57 touchdown passes per game.
On the season, Bonner was 263-of-429 (.613) passing to rank fourth in school history in completions, sixth in attempts and seventh in completion percentage. He also had 3,694 yards of total offense to rank as the second-most in school history.
Bonner's 36 touchdown passes a year ago are tied for the fourth-most in a single season in Mountain West history and the seventh-most in school history for a career. Five of those TD passes came in the Aggies' 35-10 win at New Mexico, tying the single-game school record.
In helping lead Utah State to its first-ever Mountain West title with a dominating 46-13 victory at No. 19 San Diego State, Bonner set championship game records for most passing touchdowns (4) and most touchdowns responsible for (4).
Bonner was named the offensive MVP of the MW championship game after completing 29-of-42 passes for 318 yards and those four TDs, setting season highs in both completions and attempts.
The 6-foot-1, 230-pound native of Rowlett, Texas, is also on the Maxwell Award and Davey O'Brien Preseason watch lists, and is a preseason second-team all-Mountain West selection by both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele.
Tyler rushed for 884 yards and seven touchdowns on 196 carries – all team bests – last season. He also caught 11 passes for 50 yards as he finished the season with 934 all-purpose yards.
Tyler had four 100-yard rushing games on the season, including a career-high 132 yards and a career-best two touchdowns in Utah State's 49-45 road win at Air Force. He also scored a career-high two touchdowns against the Falcons, including a career-long 61-yarder.
The 5-8, 210-pound native of Beaumont, Texas, is also on the Doak Walker Preseason Watch List.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List will be narrowed down to as many as 16 semifinalists in November and then up to five finalists in December. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and previous winners. The finalists will be brought to Tyler, Texas, for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for Jan. 11, 2023.
Utah State opens the 2022 season at home against Connecticut on Saturday, Aug. 27. The game will be televised nationally on Fox Sports 1, at 2 p.m.
