Utah State Women’s Basketball Rally Falls Short in 68-63 Loss to Nevada

LOGAN, Utah – 
Utah State women's basketball nearly completed a remarkable comeback in its 68-63 Mountain West home loss to Nevada here inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum Saturday afternoon.
 
Trailing by 29 points (46-17) at the 9:40 mark of the third quarter, Utah State (4-19, 1-11 MW) fought all the way back to within three points in the final minute but could get no closer as Nevada (9-14, 6-6 MW) went 5-of-6 at the free throw line in the final 1:06 to hang on for the win.
 
Junior guard Tamiah Robinson led Utah State with 16 points, five rebounds and three steals, while graduate guard Maria Carvalho had 14 points and five boards. Graduate guard Mayson Kimball added 10 points.
 
Nevada was led by 18 points from Victoria Davis, while Audrey Roden had 17 points and 13 rebounds.
 
Nevada outscored Utah State 25-7 in the first quarter and took a commanding 44-17 lead into the locker room as the Wolf Pack shot 46.4 percent (13-of-28) in the first half, including 36.4 from 3-point range (4-of-11) and 82.4 percent at the free throw line (14-of-17). USU made just 4-of-26 (.154) field goals in the first 20 minutes.
 
However, the second half was all Aggies, courtesy of a full-court press and trapping defense that forced the Wolf Pack into 18 second-half turnovers. USU's defense also limited UN to just 27.3 percent shooting (6-of-22) in the second half, while the Aggies shot 38.7 percent (12-of-31) and made 18-of-23 (.783) free throws, including 15-of-19 (.789) in the fourth quarter alone.
 
Utah State outscored Nevada 18-10 in the third period as it used a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 22 points and closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to get within 19 points and 54-35.
 
Neither team scored in the first 3:03 of the fourth quarter before Kimball hit a pair of free throws to begin a 6-0 run for the Aggies to make the score 54-41 with 6:25 to play. Trailing 62-48 at the 2:42 mark, USU went on a 12-1 run to get within three points at 63-60 with 1:16 remaining. Carvalho led the charge for Utah State with 12 of the team's 14 points during its final push.
 
Utah State outscored Nevada 28-14 in the final 10 minutes and forced 10 turnovers by the Wolf Pack.
Utah State finished the game shooting 28.1 percent (16-of-57), including 20.7 percent (6-of-29) from 3-point range, and 71.4 percent (25-of-35) at the free throw line. Nevada shot 38.0. percent (19-of-50), including 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from behind the 3-point arc, and 78.8 percent (26-of-33) at the charity stripe.
 
Nevada finished the game with 26 turnovers as compared to just 11 for Utah State, while the Aggies had 12 steals. The Wolf Pack controlled the glass as they outrebounded the Aggies, 49-27.
