LOGAN, Utah - Utah State freshman midfielder Summer Diamond has been named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week after leading the Aggies to a 1-1 start to the 2023 campaign.
In USU's 5-1 win over Weber State last Thursday, Diamond became the first true freshman in program history to register a brace in their collegiate debut, scoring a pair of first-half goals to propel the Aggies to an opening-day win. The native of Uinta, Utah, scored first on an arching corner kick that found the back of the net just over four minutes into the match, then struck again before halftime with a 40th-minute goal. On the week, Diamond totaled two goals, four points, three shots and two shots on goal while starting both matches and logging 129 minutes on the pitch.
Diamond and the Aggies return to action on Thursday, Aug. 24, hosting Utah at 5 p.m., in part three of a three-match homestand to open the season. Utah State then travels to Lubbock, Texas, for its first road trip of the season as it faces Texas Tech on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 6:02 p.m. (CT).
