Utah State Athletics 2022-23 Year In Review

Athletic Accomplishments

•  Men's basketball finished the 2022-23 season with an overall mark of 26-9, and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the past five seasons, earning an at-large berth as a 10-seed to the Big Dance.

• Volleyball recorded one of its best seasons in school history in 2022, winning the program's first Mountain West Tournament title and reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010. The Aggies went 22-11 overall with an 11-7 mark in conference play. After a 22-9 showing in 2021, USU set a program record for most wins across a two-year span.

• Men's cross country team qualified for the NCAA Championships for the fourth time in program history, placing 26th out of 31 teams, with junior Yonas Mogos the first Aggie across the line. The Aggie women sent two representatives to the NCAA Championships in graduate senior Mica Rivera and sophomore Ana Weaver. 

• Junior Brennan Benson and freshman Logan Hammer claimed MW championships for track & field at the MW Outdoor Championships. Benson won the 800 meters with a time of 1:48.94, the fifth-best time in program history, while Hammer cleared a height of 5.25 meters (17-2.75) to win the pole vault.

• Men's tennis finished with an overall record of 12-13 and a 3-3 mark in Mountain West play. The Aggies reached the championship match of the MW Tournament, defeating UNLV and New Mexico before falling to Boise State. Senior David Cierny also tied the program record for highest individual ITA ranking, reaching as high as 111th in the nation.

• Utah State soccer finished its 2022 season with an overall record of 8-5-8, including a 5-3-3 mark in the Mountain West. The Aggies secured a berth in the MW Tournament for the second-straight year, a first for the program since 2013-14. 

• Football received an invite to the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl, playing in a bowl game for the 10th time in the past 12 seasons

• Men's basketball's Steven Ashworth and volleyball's Tatum Stall were named USU's men's and women's Student-Athletes of the Year, respectively. 

• Gymnastics sent junior Brianna Brooks and senior Sofi Sullivan to the NCAA Regional Championships in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Brooks tied for third in the bars with a score of 0.925, the second-best score in program history, while Sullivan placed seventh on beam with a score of 9.875.


Academic Accomplishments

• Utah State had 197 student-athletes recognized with academic all-Mountain West honors and led the conference with 194 student-athletes recognized as Mountain West Scholar-Athletes. Furthermore, 224 student-athletes where honored at the Joe E. and Elma Whitesides luncheon with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better. 

• Over 75 percent of Utah State student-athletes earned a 3.0 or higher GPA as 68 student-athletes were named to the Dean's List for having at least a 3.5 or higher with 15 or more credit hours. 

• Four programs earned the NCAA's Public Recognition Award with perfect APR scores of 1,000 as men's and women's cross country, gymnastics and women's tennis all accomplished the feat.
