LOGAN, Utah – In the team's final non-conference matchup of the season, Utah State women's basketball fell to UC Riverside, 74-59, on Wednesday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
The Highlanders used a hot-shooting first quarter to take an early eight-point lead as the visitors hit four of their first six shots from behind the 3-point line. A pair of 3-pointers from senior guard
Cheyenne Stubbs and freshman guard
Carlie Latta helped the Aggies keep pace in the opening frame. USU twice trimmed the deficit to one point following a pair of buckets from junior guard
Jamisyn Heaton before UC Riverside hit another 3 at the end of the quarter to take a 20-16 lead into the second. After the Highlanders extended their lead to nine points, Utah State answered back with a 6-0 burst to get back within 29-26. From there, however, UC Riverside went on an 18-2 run spanning the second and third quarters to go up 47-28.
As they have on numerous occasions during non-conference play, the Aggies fought back from the large deficit. Freshman guard
Denae Skelton hit a 3-pointer to spark a 9-2 run which brought the deficit back within single digits midway through the fourth quarter. The Aggie comeback ran out of time, however, as the Highlanders were able to salt away the win over the final minutes.
Heaton led the Aggies with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting, her team-leading fourth time as USU's leading scorer this season. Heaton and sophomore forward
Gracie Johnson each hauled in six rebounds to lead the team, while Heaton also tied for the team lead in steals alongside freshman guard/forward
Taliyah Logwood with two each. Johnson finished with six points in addition to her six rebounds, also blocking two shots on the night, while Logwood also led the team with three assists. Latta added 10 points as the second-leading scorer, going 3-of-4 from the field and 2-of-3 from 3-point range.
The Aggies shot 42.3 percent from the field (22-of-52) with a 31.6 percent mark from behind the arc (6-of-19). USU also shot 75.0 percent from the free throw lines, converting 9-of-12 from the charity stripe. The Utah State bench outscored the Highlander bench in the game, 24-17, with Skelton and junior guard
Mia Tarver leading the charge with eight and seven points off the bench, respectively.
