Game Recap: Women's Basketball |
LOGAN, Utah – For the second-straight game, senior Cheyenne Stubbs and freshman Carlie Latta came through when the Aggies needed them most. Down eight at halftime, the duo led the Aggies on a 37-point third-quarter onslaught to help Utah State women's basketball defeat Nevada, 93-75, on Saturday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

Scoring 28 and 20 points, respectively, Stubbs and Latta are just the second Aggie duo ever to post back-to-back games of scoring at least 20 points each and the first since Jennifer Schlott and Makenlee Williams did so in 2014.

The Wolf Pack opened the game with a 9-2 run to take an early lead before the Aggies responded with a 12-4 burst over a three-minute span late in the first quarter to jump in front at 19-17. USU lived by the 3-point line as triples from junior Mia Tarver and freshman Carlie Latta bookended the stretch while senior guard Cheyenne Stubbs drew a foul to earn three free throws in the midst of the run.

After clawing back to the lead, however, Nevada answered back with a 9-0 run leading into the second quarter and led by as many as 14 during the period before Utah State closed the half on an 8-2 run in the final two minutes. Junior guard Jamisyn Heaton worked into the post for a layup in the final seconds before Tarver forced a Wolf Pack turnover, leading to a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Latta to send the Aggies into halftime trailing only 42-34.

Utah State's momentum continued after halftime, extending the Aggie run to 15-2 to tie the game at 44. Both Stubbs and Latta hit 3-pointers as part of the run as USU's offense ignited in the third quarter. The Aggies scored a season-high 37 points in the third frame, shooting 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the field and 7-of-9 (77.8 percent) from behind the 3-point line. Stubbs and Tarver each hit a pair of 3s in the quarter while Latta went a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc as USU turned an eight-point halftime deficit into a nine-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Stubbs scored 12 while Latta added 10 in the period. Tarver also added eight points in the frame to help turn the tide for the Aggies.

USU continued to force the issue in the final frame as the Aggies ultimately outscored Nevada in the second half, 59-33, including holding the Wolf Pack to only 13 points in the fourth quarter. Heaton scored on a layup to open the final period and extend Utah State's lead to double digit. After Nevada battled back to within nine points with under eight minutes remaining, the Aggies fully shut the door by holding the Wolf Pack without a point over nearly five minutes of game time. USU went on a 9-0 run during the defensive stretch with Stubbs hitting the dagger 3-pointer to go up 87-69 with two minutes remaining and allowing the Aggies to melt the game away.

Stubbs led USU with 28 points, becoming the first Aggie to score 28 or more points in back-to-back games since Funda Nakkasoglu in February of 2016. Stubbs shot 8-of-17 from the floor and 5-of-8 from 3-point range, also going a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line and posting a team-high six assists and three steals.

Latta finished with 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including a 5-of-7 mark from deep and posted USU's lone block of the game. Tarver added 18 points, marking only the seventh time in program history Utah State has had three players score at least 18 points and the first time since 2018 (Hailey Bassett, Shannon Dufficy and Olivia West). Tarver shot 7-of-14 from the field and 3-of-7 from 3-point range and added four rebounds and two steals. Junior center Sophie Sene posted a team-high seven rebounds for the Aggies.

Utah State shot 48.5 percent (32-of-66) from the floor and recorded a 48.1 percent (13-of-27) mark from 3-point range, the team's best 3-point performance of the season. USU's 13 3-pointers are tied for a season-high and mark only the third time ever the Aggies have registered multiple games of at least 13 made 3s in the same season.

As a team, USU tied their season-high with 27 forced turnovers and outscored Nevada, 27-10, in points off turnovers for the game. The Aggies also held a 14-10 edge in fastbreak points and a 15-7 lead in points off the bench.

Utah State celebrated Senior Day prior to the game, honoring Stubbs and senior forwards Samiana Suguturaga and Allyzee Verdan in an on-court ceremony before tip-off.

With the win plus San José State's loss to UNLV on Saturday, the Aggies moved into a tie for 10th place in the Mountain West standings with only one game remaining in the regular season. Utah State holds the tiebreaker over the Spartans courtesy of the team's season sweep over SJSU.

The Aggies close out the regular season at Boise State on Tuesday, March, 4, at 6:30 p.m., before preparing for the Mountain West Tournament to take place in Las Vegas on Sunday through Wednesday, March 9 through 12.
