Learning Specialist – The Learning Specialist (LS) works in conjunction with the Associate Athletics Director for SAAS to oversee and maintain a Learning Specialist Program (LSP) for all student-athletes. In this capacity, the Learning Specialist conducts one-on-one meetings with a caseload of at-risk student-athletes, teaching learning strategies and academic needs.
Additionally, the LS conducts intake assessments on student-athletes to identify areas of academic strengths, weaknesses, and any signs of learning disability. From these assessments, the LS may pair student-athletes with a tutor and/or mentor for academic support, as well as coordinate testing services and accommodations for student-athletes with the campus Disability Resource Center (DRC) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).
Throughout the academic school year, the LS hosts academic skills workshops for struggling student-athletes. During the summer, the LS oversees part of the athletics summer bridge programming by teaching a section of USU 1730 -
Strategies for Academic Success to incoming freshman and transfer student-athletes.
