LOGAN, Utah -
Utah State University's athletic teams once again produced some outstanding team and individual performances in 1999-2000. Highlighting the success was a Big West Conference basketball championship, an eastern division title in volleyball and several All-America performances in track by James Parker and Shae Bair.
The basketball championship gave USU its 26th league title in the last nine years and capped an incredible season in which USU won 19 straight games before falling to defending national champion Connecticut in the NCAA Tournament.
On the field, football player Steve Mullins was named a freshman All-American punter by The Sporting News, while James Parker earned All-America honors in both indoor and outdoor track. Track standout Shae Bair also earned All-America honors in the high jump.
USU had 28 student-athletes earn first-team all-conference honors, including five football players. Two Aggie athletes earned conference player of the year honors, including two-time selection Christy Denson in gymnastics and softball player Sandy Taylor.
In the classroom, 70 Aggie student-athletes earned academic all-conference honors, with several players garnering academic All-America and/or all-district accolades.
