LOGAN, Utah - - Tina Ellis won two events en route to claiming the all-around individual championship to lead Utah State to a 194.075 to 193.600 win against Boise State in its home women gymnastics opener. The Aggies improved to 2-3 on the season, while Boise State fell to 1-2.
The win avenged a season-opening loss by Utah State at Boise State. In Boise, the Aggies scored just 188.88, while the Broncos won that Jan. 15 meet with a 192.225 score.
Utah State opened the meet with a 48.325 on the vault. Junior Jessenia Abrego (Las Vegas, Nev.) led the team scoring a 9.750 and freshman Mika Houston (Las Vegas, Nev.) turned in a 9.700.
USU couldn't be stopped in the second rotation as it tied the fourth best bar score in school history posting a 49.225. Five athletes either tied or set new career highs on the event. Sophomore Tina Ellis (Kearns, Utah) won the event with her 9.925 and Houston followed close behind with a 9.875.
The Aggies were forced to count two falls in the third rotation posting just a 47.900 on the beam. Ellis again led the team with a 9.850 performance.
Utah State clinched the victory in the final rotation notching a 48.625 on the floor exercise. Senior Kristin O'Dell recorded a season-high 9.800, while Ellis continued to dominate scoring a team-high 9.850.
Utah State will return to action when it hosts Southern Utah on Friday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.
