Thatcher Wins Consolation Final As Aggies Finish Tournament

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Utah State Aggies Women's tennis team, completed the U of U Invitational, with two Aggies squaring off in the finals of the consolation bracket. Senior Amy Thatcher defeated Freshman Carolyn Larsen 6-2, 6-3 Saturday evening.

The two Aggie women lost in the first round of action, then beat their next three opponents to reach the final round of consolation play. Thatcher beat Kendra Gleason from SUU, Chelsea Drews from Weber State and then Ashlee Gardener from SUU also before facing teammate Larsen.

Larsen's path to the finals included victories over Kelly Patterson from SUU, Andee Durrant from SUU, and then fellow teammate Amelia Martinez.

Other Aggies made a good showing in the tournament.

Sarah Lowe and Caroline Pollock finished strongly in doubles play reaching the semifinals before falling to Utah's second-seeded Ronnberg and Kotoglou on Saturday.

Pollock also advanced to the semi finals in singles play, before losing to top seed and tournament champion Therina Steenkamp from Weber State.

Head Coach Christian Wright expects some of the Aggie women to receive invitations to compete in the Rolex Region 7 Invitational in Las Vegas Oct. 24 - 28.
