LOGAN, Utah - Michelle Matheson led Utah State's volleyball team to its third straight win and the Aggies posted victory for the 10th time in their last 13 outings with a 3-0 victory against Weber State here Tuesday night. The win improved USU to 14-7 on the year, while the Wildcats fell to 12-13.
USU's three-game victory was its third straight 3-0 win as the Aggies had defeated Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside by the same score last week. USU won 30-21, 30-17 and 30-19.
Three Utah State players recorded double-digit kill totals as Matheson had 16, Erin Cartwright 14 and Lisa Borom 10. Matheson hit .682 as she had only one error on her 22 attempts. Matheson also had a game-high 11 digs and recorded four total blocks in the contest.
"We didn't crack the ball consistently, but at least we made contact," said USU head coach Burt Fuller. "Michelle (Matheson) was on fire. Erin (Cartwright) picked it up and got some kills. (Setter) Chelsi (Neves) did a good job of isolating and getting the ball to the right person."
With her four blocks, Matheson, a senior from Moreno Valley, Calif., moved into third place on the USU career blocks list with 283. USU meanwhile recorded 58 kills in the three games for its second-best three-game total this year (59 vs. Cal State Northridge).
Weber State was led by Stephanie Metcalf, who recorded 13 kills, nine digs and three blocks.
With the victory, Utah State, which swept the state teams last year in the regular season, finished this season with a 2-1 mark against Utah schools. This year the Aggies defeated Brigham Young and Weber State, while losing to Utah. USU also improved to 23-5 at home in the last three years, including a 6-1 mark this season.
Utah State will play three straight road games, traveling to Cal State Northridge on Thursday and playing at Pacific on Saturday. USU will also play at Idaho State on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
