PROVO, Utah -
Kevin Peterson shot a 73, while teammate Nick Summers fired a 74 to lead Utah State to its best round of the 54-hole Ben Hogan Cougar Men's Golf Classic, but it wasn't enough to move the Aggies up in the standings as USU finished 15th in the 16-team event here Saturday.
USU opened the tournament with a 310 in the morning Friday and improved one shot in that day's afternoon round. On Saturday the Aggies cut their score to 301.
San Diego State cruised to the team victory shooting a 16-under par 848 to defeat runner-up UC Santa Barbara by 17 shots. Tulsa was third and host Brigham Young was fourth at 868 and 869 respectively.
The Aztecs boasted the top two individual finishers as well as Lars Johansson earned medalist honors by shooting a 209 total, while John Lepak was second at 211.
Utah State was led by Kevin Blotter, who tied for 55th with a 227 score. Peterson and Summers each tied for 71st with 230 totals, while Nate Blotter tied for 86th at 237, Woody Spainhower was 91st at 240 and Phil Kalivas was 94th at 243.
The tournament was the final regular season event for the Aggies, who will compete in the Big West Championships at El Dorado Hills, Calif., April 30-May 1.
