PROVO, Utah - Utah State trailed host Brigham Young by just 0.275 going into the fourth rotation Friday night, but struggled on the bars, scoring its second-lowest event score of the year with a 47.075. The Aggies finished the meet in third with a 192.850, behind BYU (195.775) and Boise State (193.250).
"It's extremely disheartening," said head coach Ray Corn. "We weren't able to put together a full four quarters of action tonight. Jessenia (Abrego) and Nicole (Kilpatrick) both had extremely good nights, but we just weren't able to pull it together in the fourth rotation. I honestly thought we had a chance to pull it together."
The Aggies posted 10 scores that either tied or set season-bests. All-arounder Jessenia Abrego scored a 9.900 on floor, tying the 10th-best individual floor score in USU history, the fourth time she's posted a 9.900 on floor in her career. Abrego and teammate Nicole Kilpatrick each scored 38.875s in the all-around category, tying for third in the all-around. Kilpatrick scored 9.750s on vault--a season high--beam and floor, and a 9.625 on bars. Junior all-arounder Mika Love Houston had the flu and did not compete, putting freshmen Nalani Chung, Sarah Colson and Jessica Rands into the Aggies' lineup.
USU's 48.600 on beam was its best score of the season, and was helped by season-high scores from Katie Rutherford (9.800) and Kirra Seeley (9.800). The Aggies scored a 48.725 on floor in the second rotation, led by Abrego and Allison Rosenthal's season-best 9.800. Colson competed on floor for the third time in her career, scoring a 9.535, while Stephanie Gordon posted a 9.750.
On vault in the third rotation, Kilpatrick and Kyla Mattioli led the Aggies with scores of 9.750, while Rands recorded a 9.650 in just her second collegiate competition. On bars, the Aggies struggled, scoring a 47.075, their lowest score of the year. Chung recorded a 9.500 in her first collegiate meet, while Kilpatrick and Abrego each scored a 9.625.
