Hayley Hawkins Named USU Athlete Of The Week

LOGAN, Utah - Freshman tennis player Haley Hawkins has been named Utah State's Athlete of the Week Tuesday. The award is voted on by a local media panel.

Hawkins won the deciding match 6-4, 6-4 against Weber State's Chelsee Drews to give Utah State its first ever win against the in-state rival Wildcats 4-3. Hawkins also won her double match, teaming with freshman Carolyn Larsen, 8-5 against Weber State's Beauchene/Roseonzweig. Hawkins improved her individual season singles record to 6-3, which is tied for the best record on the team.

The Aggies will return to action April 3 at Weber State.

Nominees from other sports:

Basketball-Tony Brown (Hyrum, Utah)... Senior guard Tony Brown led Utah State to the championship game of the 2002 Big West Tournament where USU lost to UC Santa Barbara 60-56. Brown, who was named to the all-tournament team, averaged 15.7 points in the tournament highlighted by a career-high 29 points against Pacific in the semifinals.

Gymnastics-Jessenia Abrego (Las Vegas, Nev.)... Jessenia Abrego set a career-best in the all-around and vault Friday against No. 17 Arizona State and Southern Utah, posting a 39.225 and a 9.875 respectively, and helping the Aggies to their best team score of the season (195.425). USU took second to Arizona State, though Abrego was the top all-arounder and tied for first on vault. She was USU's top finisher on floor, taking third (9.875), and was the only Aggie to finish among the top three in any event.

Men's Tennis-Jason Trask (St. George, Utah)... Jason Trask improved his overall singles season record to 9-5 with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Weber State's Phillip Ivanov in the number three match. Trask also won his doubles match teaming with Steve Peterson, 8-3 against Weber State's Bahreneu/Abeaboeru. Trask holds the best singles record for Utah State (9-5) and won his first doubles match of the season Thursday against Weber State.
