LOGAN, Utah -
Competitors from Utah State's men's and women's track teams took part in last-chance track meets in Seattle and Pocatello, Idaho for a last chance to qualify for the NCAA Championship next week. The Aggies had several strong finishes, but failed to improve on their season bests.
Candice Workman took first place in the women's shot put at Washington (48-00.00). Her first place finish was short of her season best 48.09.50.
Justin Wickard placed second in the 60-meter hurdles (7.97) at Washington, three-hundredths of a second faster than his previous best (8.00). His time was short of the 7.90 qualifying mark. Wickard was ranked 26th in the nation in long jump (7.57 meters) as of this weekend.
In the men's 400-meter, Brett Guymon finished fourth with a time of 47.49, short of his 47.08 season-best. Guymon was ranked 22nd in NCAA Division I as of this weekend.
Maurice Jenkins finished sixth in pole vault at a height of 16-06.00, but failed to meet his best mark of 17-1.75 which gave him a national ranking of 30th.
In women's pole vault, Shae Bair posted a third place mark of 12-5.50. Bair's season best (12-9.5) placed her in 33rd place nationally. Debra Barker finished in a sixth-place tie with a vault of 11-6, six inches short of her season best. Kristi Connors finished second in the women's 400-meter (54.66), but didn't match her fastest time of 54.03, which was the 22nd fastest in the country.
Connors, Guymon, Wickard, Bair and Jenkins had provisionally qualifying marks this season. Qualifiers for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be announced March 4. The championships will be held March 8-9 in Fayetteville, Ark.
