LOGAN, Utah -
Utah State's Haley Hawkins defeated Chelsee Drews of Weber State in the deciding match to lead the Aggies to a 4-3 victory against in-state rival Weber State Wednesday afternoon in Logan. Playing at home for the first time since Jan. 21, USU improved its record to 5-4, while the Wildcats dropped to 1-8 on the season.
It is believed that this victory is the first ever by Utah State against Weber State (records are incomplete). The Aggies now have almost a month to rest before their next match when they will again face Weber State in Ogden on April 3.
Doubles victories from USU's Carolyn Larsen and Haley Hawkins and from Amy Thatcher and Jocee Bergeson gave the Aggies the early 1-0 lead.
Caroline Pollock and Shelly Ferguson gave the Aggies their second and third points with their singles victories. Pollock defeated Briana Beauchene 6-4, 7-6, and Ferguson defeated Tiffany Smith by the same score. With both teams watching the final match, Hawkins defeated Drews 6-4, 6-4 to give the Aggies the victory.
"Hopefully the monkey is off our back," Utah State coach Chris Wright said referring to the Aggies first victory over Weber State. "I told the team to enjoy it. It is a big win and to break that cycle is huge. I hope they look back at this match and gain confidence from it."
Utah State's men's tennis team will host Weber State's men Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Sports Academy. The Aggies defeated the Wildcats earlier this season at the UNLV Invitational 4-3.
