Final Stats

FULLERTON, Calif. - Utah State gymnastics (1-1) posted two 39.000-plus all-around finishes to open its 2003 season, including a record-setting performance by freshman Meagan Nelson, but took second place to host Cal State Fullerton (2-0) in a tri-meet with CSF and Illinois-Chicago (0-2). CSF scored 193.875 to win the meet, USU took second with 192.050 and UIC finished third at 191.700.

USU's Nelson is the first freshman to score above a 39.000 in her all-around debut in Utah State history. She won the all-around competition with a 39.175 and led the Aggies on beam (9.750) and floor (9.875). Teammate Nicole Kilpatrick took second in the all-around (39.075) and was USU's top scorer on vault (9.800).

"Nicole and Meagan were outstanding. I'm very pleased with their performances," said head coach Ray Corn. "We had to count some falls and that hurt us, but at the same time we had a lot of bright spots. We were not far from a sensational meet."

Freshman Jessica Parenti won the bars title, scoring a 9.925 for USU, the sixth-best bars score in school history. The Aggies dominated the top five bars scores, as Kilpatrick finished second, Nelson tied for third and sophomore Katie Rutherford finished fifth. Cal State Fullerton took the top three places on beam, and was led by all-arounder Kelly Mathiasen's 9.900.

Utah State travels to Oklahoma Sunday, Jan. 19 to face the host Sooners and Boise State in a 1 p.m. MST meet.
