LOGAN, Utah - Utah State freshman gymnast Meagan Nelson won the all-around title with her third straight score of 39 or better as she posted a 39.500 to lead the Aggies to a 195.500 to 193.675 victory against Boise State in their home opener.
Nelson's all-around score was the third highest in school history behind only Christy Denson who had scores of 39.550 and a 39.525 in her career.
Nelson, a freshman from Las Vegas, Nevada, tied for the vault title with a 9.850 score and won the floor exercise with a score of 9.950. USU's Rachel Ropelato tied her teammate on the vault, while Nicole Kilpatrick won the beam with a 9.950 score.
USU performed well on the beam scoring a 49.250 as all six Aggies recorded career highs in that event.
"We had our troubles on bars and continue to struggle a little bit there," said USU head coach Ray Corn. "The beam and floor came through."
USU scored just 48.275 on the bars, but recorded a 49.200 on the floor.
"The 195.500 is one of the highest posted scores we have ever had in a third-meet outing." Corn said. "As I told the team, there is more there and they know there is more there. We just have to keep going out and plugging away. Our freshmen are not really used to going out every weekend."
Utah State will host Utah on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.
