LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's women's volleyball team lost a three-game match (27-30, 23-30, 35-37) to UC Irvine here Thursday night to fall to 9-6 on the season and 2-3 in the Big West Conference. With the win, the Anteaters improved to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in league play.
UC Irvine controlled much of the first two games, hitting .436 (21-4-39) in game one and .250 (14-5-36) in game two. USU played well offensively in the first game and hit .348 (20-4-46), but hit just .061 (17-14-49) in the second game. In game three, USU built a 24-17 advantage before UC Irvine fought back and eventually won the game 37-35 to win the match three games to none.
Senior middle blocker Erin Cartwright-Davis (Hyrum, Utah) led USU with 18 kills and 11 digs, while hitting .316 (18-6-38) in the match. Freshmen Mari Ruddick (Canyon Country, Calif.) and Beth Hodge (Broken Arrow, Okla.) each added 10 kills, while sophomore Erin Graybill (Sandy, Utah) added nine kills and led USU with a .389 (9-2-18) hitting percentage. Freshman Dominque Arsenault (Quebec City, Quebec) saw her first action of the season tonight at setter and recorded 26 assists and two kills in two games.
As a team, Utah State hit .214 (56-26-140) in the match, while UC Irvine hit .338 (60-15-133). UCI also recorded four more kills (60-56), and three more team blocks (9-6) in the match, while USU had nine more hitting errors (26-15).
Utah State will return to action next weekend with a pair of road matches at UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 10 and at Cal Poly on Oct. 11.
