Utah State Gymnastics Inks Texas Recruit

LOGAN, Utah - Sarah Johnson, the 2004 Region 3 bronze medalist on floor, has signed a national letter of intent to compete at Utah State University it was announced on Monday by women's gymnastics head coach Ray Corn.

Johnson, a high school senior from Arlington, Texas, is finishing her high school curriculum with the Texas Tech University Independent School District. She has been a member of Kurt Thomas Gymnastics since 1998 where former Olympian and World Champion Kurt Thomas has been coaching her.

"Sarah brings to USU gymnastics a tremendous work ethic and drive," said assistant gymnastics coach Jeff Graba. "She is also highly experienced in national level competitions and should be able to help us on every event."

Johnson has qualified for Junior Olympic Nationals the last two years. In 2002 she won the vault title and finished third in the all-around at the Level 9 Regionals. In 2003, Johnson placed third on bars, floor and the all-around at the Level 10 Regionals. In addition to being the 2004 Region 3 bronze medalist on floor, she finished 14th in the all-around at Nationals.

Apart from gymnastics, Johnson stays busy being a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Health and Occupational Sciences Association and has been very active in helping her parish community as a member of Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

"I chose Utah State University because of the emphasis on a quality education, specifically placing pre-med students into medical school programs," Johnson said. "The entire gymnastics team was very friendly and made me feel very welcome. I am looking forward to joining the USU Aggies."
