Dantly Young Named USU Athlete Of The Week

LOGAN, UT - Dantley Young, who plays the No. 5 spot on USU's men's tennis team, won all four of his singles matches this week. For his efforts he was named Utah State University Athlete of the Week. A state media panel votes on the weekly award.

Young, a sophomore from West Jordan, Utah, started the week as the Aggies defeated Eastern Washington 7-0 on Sunday, April 10. He lost the first set at No. 5 (4-6), but came back to win the next two sets 7-5, 10-7. In doubles play, he teamed with Mike Banks to take the No. 2 spot 8-5.

On Tuesday, April 12, Young gave the Aggies their winning point against rival Idaho State in Utah State's 4-3 win. He took the No. 5 spot 6-2, 7-6, but lost in doubles with Banks 9-8(2).

On Wednesday the Aggies traveled to Weber State where they swept the Wildcats 7-0. Young contributed another win at No. 5 beating his opponent in two sets 7-5, 6-0. Young and Banks recorded their second win of the week, taking No. 2 doubles 8-4.

In Young's final match of the week he again took the No. 5 spot helping the Aggies to a 6-1 win over Northern Colorado here in Logan. He won the match 6-1, 6-1, but lost in doubles with Banks 8-5.

Young finished regular season play this spring with a five match winning streak, and a 9-8 record. USU Tennis will play in the Big West Championships on Friday, April 22 in Indian Wells, Calif.

Other Nominees:

Women's Tennis-Carolyn Stephens...A senior and Logan native, recorded two wins at No. 3 singles this week. In the Aggies' 7-0 victory over Eastern Washington on Sunday April, 10 she beat Kim Cabiling 6-2, 6-0. In doubles play, she teamed with Lindsey Bennion to take the No. 1 spot 8-4. Against Weber State on Thursday, April 14 she beat Chelsee Drews 6-3, 6-1 in Utah State's 5-2 loss. In doubles play, she and Bennion lost a close match, 9-8. Stephens carries a 10-10 record this spring.

Men's Track and Field-Rod McNeal...Finished first in the 200 meters with a time of 21.00 and set a regional qualifying mark in the same event. McNeal also finished first in the 100 meters with a time of 10.50 and was part of the Utah State 4X100 meter relay team that finished first with a time of 40.71.

Women's Track and Field-Katie Thatcher...Set a new personal best and regional qualifying time when she finished first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.44.

Softball-Amy Schiable...Had five RBI's in a 10-0 win against UC Riverside on Saturday. During that game she went two of three from the plate and had two runs. During the second game of the day she had one hit in a 3-2 loss to UC Riverside. On Sunday against UC Riverside she went two of three from the plate with two RBI's and one run. Earlier in the week she had zero hits against Colorado State and Utah.
