LOGAN, Utah - In Utah State's Flip and Stick for the Cure gymnastics meet, the Aggies were topped by the visiting Pioneers of Denver, 195.250-192.300, Friday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
The loss drops USU to 3-10 overall while 13th-ranked DU improves to 11-3.
Utah State posted season-bests on bars and floor with a 48.650 and 48.900, respectively, marking the second meet in a row the Aggies have logged a season-high on bars after last week's 48.450.
Individually, freshman Nicole Simoneau tied her season-best for the third time this season with a 9.850 in winning the bars, marking the sixth time this year that she has won or shared the win on the apparatus. Friday was also the eighth time in nine meets that she has tallied a 9.800 or higher on bars.
That was the only event that an Aggie finished first, as Denver's Sasha Sullivan won the all-around with a 39.250, including winning the floor with a 9.950, while teammates Courtney Butler (9.875) and Nikki Brown (9.800) won the vault and beam, respectively.
USU freshman Lyndsie Boone was the Aggies' top placer in the all-around with a 38.250 in just her second all-around outing this season.
Fellow freshman Jasmine Minion was the top USU gymnast on vault with a 9.800, good for third-place, while junior Nicki Felley finished third on beam with a season-best 9.750, just shy of her career-high 9.825.
Sophomore Heather Heinrich did post a new career-best on floor with a 9.825 in placing in a tie for third with Felley, who tied a season-high with the 9.825. Boone and classmate Jackie Dillon followed in a tie for fifth with 9.800's, both posting season-bests.
USU opened the meet on vault, logging a 48.425 while DU tallied a 48.900 on bars. The teams switched apparatuses, with the Aggies scoring a 48.650 on bars and the Pioneers posted a 48.950 on vault to take a 97.850-97.075 lead at the midway point of the meet.
For the third rotation, Utah State was on beam and scored a 46.325 while Denver dialed up a 48.900, opening a 147.000-143.400 lead heading into the final event.
Four scores of 9.800 or higher in logging a season-high 48.900 on floor was not enough for USU to overcome the deficit to DU as the Pioneers tallied a 48.250 on beam to win the meet.
The Aggies host the second half of their two-meet homestand on Friday, March 7, taking on San Jose State in a Western Athletic Conference dual with action starting at 6:30 p.m. Utah State turns around and competes at BYU on Monday, March 10 at 4 p.m.
