Aggie Gymnastics Clawed By Cougars, 196.300-194.250, Monday

PROVO, Utah - For the second meet in a row, Utah State posted a score higher than 194, as the Aggie gymnastics team lost to Brigham Young, 196.300-194.250, Monday afternoon at BYU's Smith Fieldhouse.

With the loss USU, who was ranked No. 45 in the new rankings released Monday, is now 4-11 overall while BYU, who climbed to 32nd-ranked, improves to 6-5. After coming up short in both meetings this season, the Aggies are now 38-58-1 all-time against the Cougars, including 6-24-1 at Provo.

After not scoring higher than a 192 in the first 10 meets of the year, USU topped the 194 mark for the second meet in a row after a season-best 194.450 on Friday.

The Aggies also recorded a season-high on vault with a 48.875 and after struggling through much of the season on beam, USU also notched a season-high for the second meet in a row, after a 48.125 this past Friday.

Senior Katie Omann tallied a career-high 9.800 on beam, tying for third, matching USU's highest place in the meet with freshman Nicole Simoneau tying for third on bars with a 9.800.

BYU's Alethea Boon won the all-around with a 39.275, while USU sophomore Heather Heinrich was second with a 38.325 while junior Nicki Felley and freshman Lyndsie Boone posted 38.125's each, tying for third.

Utah State opened on bars, with Omann leading off with a 9.725 and Simoneau closing out the rotation with a 9.800. Simoneau tied for third, USU's only finisher in the top six. It was Simoneau's 10th logging of a 9.800 or higher on bars in 11 meets this season. USU tallied a 48.350 on the apparatus, while BYU scored a 49.200 on vault, switching events for the second rotation.

Moving to vault, Boone opened with a 9.750, for a new season-high, followed by Omann's 9.6 then freshman Jasmine Minion tallied a 9.875, tying her season-high and placing third. Freshman Jackie Dillon posted a season-high 9.825 and was matched by sophomore Heather Heinrich with a 9.825 to close out the rotation. Dillon and Heinrich's scores were good for a tie at fourth.

The Aggies logged a new season-high on vault with a 48.875, while the Cougars registered a 49.000 on bars and BYU maintained a 98.200-97.275 lead at the meet's midway point.

USU was on floor for the third rotation and after Heinrich notched a 9.750, Minion tied for fourth by tallying a 9.800, her fifth score of 9.800 or higher on floor this season. Utah State scored a 48.300 while BYU scored a 49.975 on beam, stretching its lead to 147.175-145.575 heading into the final event.

On beam for the final rotation, the Aggies posted solid scores, led by Omann's career-high 9.800 while Felley and Boone tied for fifth as they both tallied 9.750's, a new season-high for Boone and matching Felley's best this season. Those scores helped USU register a 48.675 on beam, the second meet in a row in logging a season-high. BYU scored a 49.125 on floor to secure the win.

After a trip to Denton, Texas on Friday, March 14 for a quad meet hosted by Texas Woman's with Kentucky and Centenary, the Aggies return home on Friday, March 21 to host in-state foe Southern Utah at 6:30 p.m.

That is USU's final home meet of the season and will be "Senior Night" as the Aggies will honor their four seniors: Tschida, Katie Omann, Kelly Patterson and Ana Rickard-Whitfield.
