Utah State men and women's track and field teams continued to execute at ahigh level on the final day of the Cougar Invitational hosted by Washington Statein Pullman, Wash., on Saturday, highlighted by six event wins.
On the day, the Aggies had 23 top-three finishes, and six event champions. Intotal at the Cougar Invitational, USU placed 29 in the top three, with a two-daytotal of eight event victories. In the triple-dual team standings, both the menand women's team won twice in beating Idaho and Montana, while losing to the hostWashington State.
"I can't remember, at least for quite sometime, when we opened the season with asgood of performances as we did this weekend," said veteran USU head coach GreggGensel. "Our young student-athletes performed well, our veterans performed well,and I am excited with what I saw yesterday and today."
Seniors Armahd Lewis and Clint Silcock, along with junior Chio Lopez led the UtahState men capturing victories in their respective events. Lewis nearly matched hiscareer-best of 6.80 as he ran 6.81 to win the 60m event two weeks in a row. Silcockwon the high jump, also for the second week in a row, with a jump of 6-10.75(2.10m) while fellow Aggie Eric Follett finishing third 6-06.75 (2.00m), his career-best. Lopez saw his first action of the season as he captured first-place (8:25.52)right ahead of teammate Daniel Howell (8:31.14).
Juniors Katelyn Heiner and Spela Hus won their events to lead the Aggie women.Heiner broke the tape first in the 400m with a 56.50 time, while sophomore AubrieHaymore (58.10) and freshman Kylie Hirschi (58.57) finished third and fourth,respectively. Hus won the shot put with a throw of 44-11.50 (13.70m) while seniorsLindsey Spencer (42-07.00 (12.98m)) and Shannon Prince (42-07.00 (12.98m)) tookthird and fourth, in that order.
Utah State's men and women's 4x400 meter relay teams also captured wins. For themen, freshman Parker Bluth, Jake Peterson, Tanner Hunt and sophomore TylerKillpack clocked in at 3:22.36. For the women, freshman Katelyn Heiner, sophomoreAubrie Haymore, and juniors Jessie Nielson and Kylie Hirschi finished with a timeof 3:53.83.
Also performing well for the men was junior John Johnson, who took second with hiscareer-best 15-11.00 (4.85m) finishing behind Jeremy Klas from Idaho. Freshman AJBoully placed third in the 60m hurdles (8.42) as did junior Jeff Alley in the 200m(22.82) with freshman Mikey Payne right behind Alley (22.90). Hunt, took second inthe 400m (49.50) with Boully's personal-best good enough for third-place (49.97).Junior Philip Noble finished second in the heptathlon (4,870 pts.), and seniorEric Larson clocked his personal-best in the 800m with a time of 1:56.15.
Juniors Ruth Hilton (10:06.40) and Kim Quinn (10:15.86) finished one and two in the3,000m, taking third-place for the USU women was senior Heidi Peterson in the 60mhurdles (8.92), sophomore Mercedes Blackwood in the 200m (26.44) and seniorAlexis Meyer in the 800m (2:21.45).
First-year USU assistant coach Yogi Teevens faced Idaho for the first time sinceleaving the Vandals to come to Utah State in the off-season.
"It could have been an awkward situation, but it wasn't," said Gensel. "I guessyou could say there were hugs all around."
Utah State will continue their indoor season next week at the Bronco Invitationalin Boise, Idaho on Jan. 28-29.
