LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's tennis (2-1, 0-0 MW) swept Southern Utah, 7-0, on Saturday to win its second match in a row. During the match, USU only dropped one set as the Aggies quickly defeated the Thunderbirds.

The day started with doubles action, where juniors Nini Guensler and Ekaterina Tugarinova defeated Veronika Rogoba and Charity Sagiao, 6-1, at the first position. Then, junior Lexi Turley made her dual match season debut when she teamed up with sophomore Sabrina Demerath for a 6-1 win at the third position against Megan Bell and Laura Martin. Rounding out doubles play, sophomores Maggie O'Meara and Meghan Lyall defeated Evgenia Marushko and Teresa De Enrique, 6-2, at the second position.

"I was really happy with how we came out in doubles," said USU head coach Sean McInerney. "It was the best we have played on all three courts this spring."

Then, the teams moved to singles play where freshman Monika Van de Vondel was the first Aggie off the court after a quick, 6-1, 6-1, win against De Enrique at the No. 3 spot. Van de Vondel improved to 2-1 in dual matches during her first collegiate season.

"Monika played her best match of the spring and is really starting to understand the style of play that will make her an elite player," McInerney said.

Then, Demerath topped Martin, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot, while Lyall nearly shut out Bell, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot. Guensler continued USU's singles success with a straight-sets win at the No. 1 spot against Rogova, 6-2, 7-6, while Tugarinova won in three sets, 7-6, 3-6, 11-9, against Marushko at the No. 2 spot. Freshman Jenna Kane rounded out the match with a 7-5, 6-1, win against Sagiao at the No. 6 spot, making the final score 7-0.

"In singles, we are starting to play the style we want, and I feel that at each position we are getting better and focusing on the right things," McInerney said.

Utah State returns to action as it closes out its four-match homestand against No. 69 Denver on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 9 a.m. at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club. Admission to all Utah State home tennis matches is free.
