LOGAN, Utah - Utah State women's tennis (11-10, 1-3 MW) snapped a three-match losing streak when it defeated Idaho (11-7, 7-1 Big Sky) on Sunday, 4-0. During the match, junior Sabrina Demerath earned her 100th win, while freshman Hannah Jones tied a school record.
"Idaho's a very good program," said USU head coach Sean McInerney. "They've been to the NCAA tournament, I believe, three or four years in a row, and they're tied for first in their conference. I think we caught them on a good day, but we also played really well. We knew how dangerous they were coming in here, and we know that we need to start winning matches like this to build momentum going into the conference tournament. We're happy with our effort today, and we're starting to play well at the right time."
The day started with doubles, and Idaho, down to five players due to injury, defaulted court three to the Aggies. Then, the duo of Demerath and senior Nini Guensler defeated Jessica Brzozowska and Claire Yang at the second position, 6-1, to claim the doubles point. The final match between USU's tandem of junior Maggie O'Meara and sophomore Monika Van de Vondel and Idaho's team of Lucia Badillos and Marianna Petrei was left unfinished with USU holding a 4-3 lead in that match.
In singles, USU immediately reached a 2-0 lead as the Vandals were forced to default a win to the Aggies at the No. 6 spot due to their injury situation. Then, Jones tied McKenzie Davis' single-season school record by picking up her 28th singles win as she swept past Yang at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-3.
Then, Van de Vondel clinched the match for the Aggies with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot against Shion Watabe. The rest of the matches were left unfinished due to Utah State picking up the match-deciding fourth point.
Utah State is back in action on Saturday, April 22, when it hosts Boise State at 10 a.m. The Aggies will honor seniors Guensler and Ekaterina Tugarinova, as it will be USU's Senior Day.
