TUCSON, Ariz. - Utah State women's tennis (2-1) lost 5-2 at Arizona (3-0) on Sunday.
"We played a solid match today against a very well-coached and talented team," head coach Sean McInerney said. "I was really happy we came away with the doubles point which gave us a chance."
In doubles, senior
Maggie O'Meara and sophomore
Hannah Jones defeated sophomore Marie Van Aelst and freshman Mary Lewis, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. At the top position, senior
Sabrina Demerath and freshman
Sasha Pisareva lost, 1-6, to senior Devin Chypyha and junior Camila Wesbrooks. The doubles decision came down to the No. 3 spot where sophomore
Sophia Haleas and redshirt freshman
Alexandra Taylor were tied up at 4-4 with freshman Gitte Heynemans and freshman Talya Zandberg. Haleas and Taylor came out victorious, clinching the doubles point with a 7-5 victory.
"In singles, we played the style we need to play, but were just unable to maintain the level of consistency that we need at this level," McInerney said. "We will keep working hard and fix that aspect of the game."
Jones lost, 4-6, 0-6, at the No. 3 spot against Wesbrooks. Sophomore
Lucy Octave lost, 2-6, 3-6, to Lewis at the No. 2 spot. O'Meara finished next, losing 3-6, 2-6 at the No. 4 spot against Zandberg. Chypyha secured the Arizona win with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the No. 1 spot against Pisareva. Haleas won her first set, 6-3, at the No. 6 spot against senior Maggie Cohen, but lost the next two, 4-6, 9-11. Seniors
Sabrina Demerath lost her first set, 6-7, but fought back to win the next two, 6-4, 13-11, at the No. 5 spot against junior Sophia Thomas.
Utah State next travels to East Lansing, Mich., to face four teams in three days. The Aggies begin with a doubleheader against Detroit Mercy and Michigan State on Friday at noon, and 5 p.m. (MT), respectively. USU then takes on Akron on Saturday at noon (MT), and Oakland on Sunday at 10 a.m. (MT).
