LOGAN, Utah – Utah State head gymnastics coach
Amy Smith announced the signing of Sofi Sullivan and Tori Loomis to National Letters of Intent on Thursday.
"We are really pleased to bring both Sofi and Tori into the program," said Smith, who is in her second year at the helm of the Aggies. "They will be incredible additions to our team next year and both of them have the potential to contribute on all four events."
Sullivan, a native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., has trained at Azarian Gymnastics for the past two years under Perry Davies. She is experienced on all four events, having competed on vault, bars, beam and floor as a level-10 gymnast for five years.
In her very first year as a level-10 gymnast, Sullivan captured the beam and floor titles at the 2014 state championships, as well as placed third in the all-around. That was just a sign of things to come for her.
Sullivan won vault and placed second in the all-around at the 2018 California Grand Invitational, and placed fourth in the all-around at the California Classic. She finished third on beam and fifth in the all-around at the state championships, then went on to win the vault title, place second on beam, third on floor and fifth in the all-around at regionals.
"Sofi is a daredevil and a trickster, and has some incredibly unique skills on several of the events that will immediately set her apart in the college scene," Smith said. "Sofi will quickly make an impact on our vault lineup. She has a 10.0 start value on vault and has the Region 1 vault title from 2018 under her belt, therefore has the ability to put up a big score on that event. Her vault is unique and dynamic."
At the 2018 Junior Olympic (JO) Nationals, Sullivan placed fourth on floor and 17th in the all-around.
In 2017, Sullivan finished first on beam and second in the all-around at the World Elite Classic. She captured third place on beam at the state championships, as well as won beam and placed 14th in the all-around at the regional meet.
"Sofi is also incredibly beautiful and consistent on beam," Smith said. "She has also been working on some E passes on floor that we are hoping to bring into the mix on that event. One thing that I loved about Sofi from the get-go was that right before we recruited her, she upped her standards on bars and has worked diligently on that event and has made vast improvements. Because of this, she now has the potential to be an all-arounder for us."
The daughter of Paul and Corina Sullivan will graduate from San Juan Capistrano High School in 2019.
"I am so excited to fulfill my dream of competing as a student-athlete at Utah State," Sullivan said. "Go Aggies!"
Loomis, a native of Corinth, Texas, has trained at the Texas Dreams Gymnastics for the last two years under Alicia Goodwin-Browning. Like Sullivan, she is experienced on all four events as a level-10 gymnast.
Loomis is a three-time Junior Olympic (JO) Nationals participant. At the 2017 JOs, she helped her club team capture the bars title and finished 18th individually in the all-around. She captured the beam title at the 2015 Texas State Championships, where she also placed fourth in the all-around, fifth on floor and sixth on vault.
"Tori also has the potential to contribute in the all-around with her strongest events being vault, bars and beam," Smith said. "She, too, has an incredibly dynamic vault and will immediately have an impact on that event. On bars, she has beautiful long lines and a graceful fluidity that is captivating to watch. Beam is absolutely on par with bars and she competes with a calm confidence on that event. Tori is also a phenomenal student boasting over a 4.0 GPA and is looking to study bio-engineering."
At the 2017 Region 3 Championships, Loomis finished second on beam, fourth in the all-around and fifth on bars. The daughter of Jim and Karen Loomis will graduate from Texas Connections Academy in 2019. She is a member of the National Honor Society, has been on the Dean's List all four years of high school and currently ranks third (out of 706) in her class.
"Becoming an Aggie is a dream come true," Loomis said. "It was love at first sight as soon as I stepped foot on campus. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be coached by
Amy Smith and to be part of such an amazing gymnastics team and program."
Utah State will officially open the 2019 season on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Pittsburgh. The Aggies' home opener is slated for the following weekend against in-state rival BYU on Friday, Jan. 18, at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. All home meets begin at 7 p.m.
