SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Utah State women's tennis (4-5) lost, 7-0, to Utah (3-1) on Thursday night in Salt Lake City.
"Today was not a great day," head coach Sean McInerney said. "From the very first point in doubles, we were very reactive and sluggish. Utah took it to us today, not much more to say than that. We will have to bounce back on Saturday and find a way to beat a good Grand Canyon team."
Utah earned the doubles point after sophomore Whitney Turley and junior Taylor Calton defeated freshman
Sasha Pisareva and senior
Maggie O'Meara, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 spot, junior Brianna Chisholm and senior Victoria Robertson won, 6-1, against senior
Sabrina Demerath and redshirt freshman
Alexandra Taylor. Sophomores
Hannah Jones and
Lucy Octave had their match at the No. 1 spot against seniors Alexia Petrovic and Jena Cheng left unfinished due to the action on the other two courts.
In singles, Pisareva lost, 5-7, 2-6, against Petrovic at the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 spot, sophomore
Rhoda Tanui lost, 2-6, 3-6, to Chisholm. Jones lost, 2-6, 1-6, to Cheng at the No. 3 spot. Demerath lost at the No. 5 spot to Calton, 2-6, 3-6, while Turley defeated Taylor at the No. 6 spot, 5-7, 2-6. Octave took her match at the No. 4 spot to three sets after losing the first, 5-7, to Robertson, but winning the second, 6-2. Octave lost the third set, 6-10.
The Aggies next travel to Phoenix for a doubleheader on Saturday against Grand Canyon (4-6) and Mesa Community College (1-1) at 10 a.m., and 2 p.m. (MT).
