EAST LANSING, Mich. - Utah State women's tennis (3-3) lost 5-2 to Akron (4-2) Saturday morning in East Lansing, Mich.
"We came out with really good energy in doubles and really took it to them at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles," head coach Sean McInerney said. "Singles was a real struggle from start to finish. Akron played exceptionally well and deserved to win. We will get better from today's result."
In doubles, sophomore Hannah Jones and Lucy Octave broke serve three times to win, 6-0, at the No. 3 spot against freshmen Anna Uljanov and Madison Wolfe. Freshman Sasha Pisareva and senior Maggie O'Meara dropped just two games to clinch the doubles point, 6-2, against senior Carli Knezevich and sophomore Rita Pedroso at the No. 1 spot. Redshirt freshman Alexandra Taylor and sophomore Sophia Haleas lost, 2-6, at the No. 2 spot against junior Luisa Echeverry and freshman Miruna Vasilescu. Akron took the first singles point after Vasilescu defeated Jones at the No. 3 spot, 6-1, 6-0. Pisareva dropped just two games to give USU its only singles win, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot against Pedroso. O'Meara lost, 4-6, 2-6, at the No. 4 spot against Uljanov. Sophomore
Rhoda Tanui lost, 4-6, 1-6, at the No. 2 spot against Knezevich. Echeverry clinched the win for the Zips at the No. 5 spot with a 6-2, 7-5 win over senior
Sabrina Demerath. Haleas won her first set, 6-4, at the No. 6 spot against Wolfe, but lost the next two, 5-7, 0-1 (7-10).
Utah State wraps up its Michigan trip on Sunday as USU takes on Oakland at 8 a.m. (MT).
