MADISON, Wis. – Utah State's men's and women's cross country teams fared well in a stacked field at the 11th-annual Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour on Friday.
No. 1 Northern Arizona won the men's 8-kilometer team title with 59 points. In a field of 33 teams, including 20 nationally-ranked squads, Utah State placed 14th overall. Senior
Luke Beattie was the first Aggie to cross the finish line, placing 49th with a time of 24:20.5. Senior
Dallin Farnsworth was close behind, finishing 55th with a time of 24:20.5.
Other Aggie finishers included senior
Adam Hendrickson in 77th (24:27.8), senior
James Withers in 110th (24:39.5), sophomore
Caleb Garnica in 111th (24:39.9), junior
Haydon Cooper in 192nd (25:22.6) and senior
J.D. Thorne in 193rd (25:23.4).
"The guys both in the 'B' race and the championship race were a little too aggressive, but we fought hard and beat a lot of great teams," said third-year USU head coach
Artie Gulden. "We came to this meet to hopefully beat some teams from other regions to set ourselves up for a potential NCAA berth. Our guys took care of business in that regard, but we also need to learn some lessons from this race moving forward as we head into the championship part of the season."
In the women's 6-kilometer run, Arkansas captured the team title with 62 points. The freshmen duo of
Bailey Brinkerhoff (21:22.8) and
Mimi Miyazawa (21:23.0) were the top finishers for the Aggies, placing 114th and 115th, respectively. As a team, Utah State finished 29th out of 36 teams with 695 points.
After Brinkerhoff and Miyazawa came sophomore
Mica Rivera in 150th (21:39.8), freshman
Abby Jensen in 154th (21:41.0), junior
Katie Struthers-Haviland in 162nd (21:46.3), sophomore
Madison Taylor in 174th (21:52.2) and senior
Josie Givens in 186th (21:59.2).
USU also had runners in the men's and women's B races. The women's team placed sixth, led by freshman
Arianna Steiner, who placed 19th overall with a time of 21:41.9. The Aggie men finished fifth in the men's 8K B race with 107 points. The Aggies were paced by freshman
Max Wehrli, who placed eighth overall with a time of 24:56.3.
"The group that collectively ran the best today were the ladies in the 'B' race," Gulden said. "They executed the race plan really well and ran tough. The ladies in the championship race ran tough as well and beat some good teams. The three freshmen really stepped up and ran well."
Utah State's men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action next weekend, as the compete at the Utah Open on Oct. 25.
