LOGAN, Utah -- Former Utah State track and field athlete Chari Hawkins fared well at the 2019 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar this week, finishing 12
th overall in the heptathlon with 6,073 points.
The first four events of the heptathlon were held Wednesday morning, with the long jump, javelin and the 800-meter run taking place on Thursday.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Hawkins placed fifth in Heat 3 with a time of 13.23. She then placed second in Group B of the high jump with a mark of 1.77 meters, and placed fourth in Group B of the shot put, throwing for a career-best 13.59 meters. In the final event of the day, Hawkins finished seventh in Heat 2 of the 200-meter run with a time of 24.81. In total, Hawkins earned 3,702 points on Wednesday to finish day one ranking 11th overall.
On Thursday, Hawkins began the day by earning a fourth-place finish in Group B of the long jump with a mark of 5.95 meters. She then placed 13
th overall in the javelin, throwing 40.07 meters. The heptathlon concluded with the 800-meter run, as Hawkins finished fifth in Heat 1 with a season-best mark of 2:16.78.
Hawkins' 6,073 points placed 12
th overall, and third among American competitors. Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson won the heptathlon with 6,981 points, the highest score earned worldwide during this season.
Hawkins, a Rexburg, Idaho native, concluded her stellar Aggie career by being selected as the 2015 Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year. She was tabbed the Women's Outstanding Performer of the Meet at the 2015 MW Outdoor Track & Field Championships in San Diego, Calif., where she won the heptathlon (5,622 points) and high jump (1.76 meters/5-9.25) titles, while taking second in the long jump (5.92 meters/19-5.25) and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (13.75).
Hawkins competed in the heptathlon at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Finals and earned her third-straight second-team All-America honor with a 14th-place finish in the event. Her point total of 5,750 points broke her own school record and was the fourth-highest total in MW history.
