MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Utah State's gymnastics team posted a season-high 196.075 to win its first quad meet since 2015, beating host West Virginia (195.575), Pittsburgh (195.100) and Cornell (193.075) in front of 1,824 fans Sunday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
"This week going into the meet was very chaotic," said second-year USU head coach
Amy Smith. "We were supposed to leave for the airport early Saturday morning, but when that winter storm rolled in on Friday, we decided to bus down to Salt Lake City that night and stay overnight. On the way down, we almost got in a car accident getting to the hotel, but the team just rolled with all the punches thrown at them throughout the week."
The Aggies' 196.075 is tied for the fourth-highest road score in school history and tied for the 12th-highest team score overall.
"We have been talking about energy and staying in battle mode from the moment they salute at the start of their routine until the moment they salute again at the end," Smith said. "It wasn't a perfect meet for us today, but it was a really great meet. I am proud of the team for accomplishing what they did. They did not let down one bit, which was awesome to see. We kept pushing and we skipped right over the 195-mark and went right to 196, which is pretty cool."
Utah State (4-6) won two individual events and the all-around crown. Senior
Madison Ward-Sessions took the top honors in the all-around with a personal-best 39.525 – the highest by any Aggie in 16 years – which is tied for second all-time in school history, along with Nicole Kilpatrick (2003) and Christy Denson (2000).
"I was so excited," Ward-Sessions said. "We were so pumped and very relaxed today. I wasn't really thinking about all my scores adding up. I was just thinking about one thing at a time and it paid off."
Ward-Sessions also captured the beam title with a career-high 9.900. The native of Rexburg, Idaho, now has 32 career titles, which ranks eighth all-time in school history. She also tied for second on vault (9.850), tied for second on bars (9.850) and tied for second on floor (9.925).
"I didn't think that would ever be possible," Ward-Sessions said of her 9.900 on beam. "I thought getting a 9.800 was really good. One of the judges showed 9.95 and I was like, 'Are you serious?' The team was so excited for me, and that was really special to me."
Sophomore
Logan Varnadore captured the Aggies' other individual title on Sunday with a career-best 9.875 on vault. Logan's twin sister,
Leighton Varnadore, placed third in the all-around with a 39.100.
Utah State got off to a solid start on bars, recording a season-high 48.900, led by Ward-Sessions' 9.850 and a 9.800 from junior
MaKayla Bullitt. In the second rotation, the Aggies had a season-best 48.950 on beam as Ward-Sessions won the event with her 9.900 and was followed by senior
Emily Briones in second with a season-high 9.850 and sophomore
Autumn DeHarde in third with 9.775.
The momentum continued to roll for Utah State on floor as it recorded a season-best 49.175, highlighted by Ward-Sessions' career-high-tying 9.925. DeHarde tied for fourth on the event with a 9.875.
The Aggies concluded the meet with a season-best 49.050 on vault. Just like on beam, Utah State had the top-three placers on the event as
Logan Varnadore took first with her 9.875, Ward-Sessions captured second with her career-high-tying 9.850 and
Leighton Varnadore tied for third with a personal-best 9.825.
Utah State returns to action on Friday, Feb. 22, when it returns home to face Alaska Anchorage starting at 7 p.m., at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
