LOGAN, Utah –
Utah State's gymnastics team tied its best score of the year on Friday night, but it wasn't enough against No. 9 Boise State as the Broncos remained perfect on the year with a 196.075-194.975 victory in front of 1,598 fans at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

"We are still building and we keep talking about the team needing to show up and bring their best when their best is needed," said second-year USU head coach Amy Smith. "That needs to be everybody, to where they are supporting each other. We saw brilliant performances tonight, and then we saw some not-so brilliant performances. We really need each gymnast, one through six, to show up and get it done for us to do what we are capable of doing."

The Aggies (1-6, 0-4 Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference) earned a couple of event titles, both courtesy of Autumn DeHarde. The sophomore had a 9.900 to tie for first on beam, along with Boise State's Shani Remme, and won the floor title outright with another 9.900.

"The first couple of meets of the season, I wasn't completely settled in," DeHarde said. "Tonight, I was more loose and I really had fun with it, and it paid off."

For DeHarde, it was the sixth beam win of her career, which is tied for 10th all-time in program history, and the fourth floor win of her career – tied for 17th all-time in USU history. She now has 10 career titles.

"This whole week, we talked about doing what we do in practice," Smith said. "That's what we see from Autumn, day in and day out, is flawless routines on beam and floor. She got the job done tonight."

Leighton Varnadore also had an outstanding meet for Utah State. The sophomore scored a career-high 39.225 to finish third in the all-around.

"We have been patiently waiting for her to put an entire meet together because we see what she can do every day in practice," Smith said. "What you saw tonight is what we see in practice. It was really great to see her put it together and be brilliant."

Varnadore finished fourth on vault with a career-high 9.800, tied for sixth on bars with a 9.775, placed third on beam with a personal-best 9.875 and tied for third on floor with a career-best 9.850.

"It was super exciting. Getting a 39.200 was my goal and now I have to set a new goal," Varnadore said. "I feel like tonight was the first time I've shown what I'm capable of, which is super exciting. I can't wait for more."

Neither can the rest of the Aggies.

"I'm so proud of Leighton," DeHarde said. "She works so hard in the gym. To see her come out tonight and do that, she really deserves it."

Senior Madison Ward-Sessions also competed in the all-around for Utah State, tallying a 39.175 to finish fourth. She tied for second on vault with a 9.825, tied for third on bars with a 9.800, tied for seventh on beam with a 9.675 and placed second on floor with a 9.875.

Utah State started the meet on vault with a 48.625. Ward had the best Aggie score of the night with her 9.825 in the anchor spot. Varnadore followed with her 9.800 in the third spot, while DeHarde (9.675), sophomore Logan Varnadore (9.675) and freshman Grace Rojas (9.650).

In the second rotation, the Aggies recorded a 48.650, led by Ward's 9.800. At the midway point of the meet, Boise State (7-0, 3-0 MRGC) led Utah State, 98.100-97.275.

Utah State matched its season-high score on beam with a 48.725. Leighton Varnadore led the team off with her stellar 9.875, while DeHarde turned in her 9.900 in the fourth spot.

Closing out the meet on floor, the Aggies posted a season-high 48.975, led by DeHarde (9.900) Ward-Sessions (9.875) and Leighton Varnadore (9.850), who finished 1-2-3, respectively.

"Overall, I definitely didn't think it was our best meet," DeHarde said. "We could've had so much more. Like coach told us, there were some good points throughout the meet and some bad points. We just have to put all of it together and do exactly what we do in practice on a daily basis."

The Broncos' 196.075 was made up of a 48.950 on vault, 49.150 on bars, 48.925 on beam and 49.050 on floor. Remme won the all-around with a 39.525, while Courtney McGregor placed second with a 39.300.

Utah State will be back in action next weekend when the Aggies step out of MRGC competition for a quad meet at West Virginia on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m., at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W.Va. Joining the Aggies and Mountaineers will be Pitt and Cornell.
