FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Utah State women's tennis (1-4, 0-0 MW), lost 4-3, to New Mexico State (2-2, 0-0 WAC) on Saturday afternoon in Flagstaff, Ariz. at the Aquatic & Tennis Complex.
In doubles, junior Hannah Jones and sophomore Alexandra Taylor won their match, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot to sophomores Harsha Challa and Gavi Kalaga. Freshman Annaliese County and junior Rhoda Tanui fell at the No. 2 spot, 4-6, to senior Lindsay Harlas and junior Rebecca Keijzerwaard. The doubles point came down to court three, as New Mexico State freshman Chloe Gavino and senior Yadira Rubio won, 6-3, against freshmen Sidnee Lavatai and Gabrielle Dekkers.
In singles, junior Alexandra Pisareva tied the match up at 1-1, with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Rubio. Jones lost at the No. 1 spot against Keijzerwaard, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, but Lavatai would even the score at 2-2, as she beat Kalaga in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. County took the 3-2 lead after a three-set victory, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot against Gavino. Octave would sweep her first set, 6-0, against Harlas, but would lose the final two sets, 1-6, 2-6, leaving Dekkers to decide the match.
With the match all tied up, it came down to the No. 4 spot where Dekkers and NMSU's Challa were facing off. Dekkers won the first set, 6-4, but Challa came back to win the final two sets, 6-2, 6-4, giving New Mexico State a 4-3 win.
Utah State will end their stay in Flagstaff tomorrow against Northern Arizona, at 10 a.m.
