LOGAN, Utah – Utah State's gymnastics team, ranked No. 34 in the nation, continues its season-long four-meet road swing when it travels to USAFA, Colo., to take on Air Force on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Cadet West Gym. The dual meet featuring the Aggies (0-5, 0-3 MRGC) and Falcons (1-2, 1-0 MPSF) will begin at 6 p.m.
Saturday's meet will be streamed live on Air Force's YouTube Channel and live scoring will be available at statbroadcast.com. Fans can also follow the Utah State gymnastics social media outlets for meet updates.
"We are looking for this team to put together a complete meet and are excited about the opportunity to do that on Saturday," said third-year USU head coach
Amy Smith.
Led by first-year interim head coach Jennifer Langley, Air Force comes into the meet fresh off a victory over Seattle Pacific, 192.450-190.300, last weekend in an MPSF dual meet, hosted in Brougham Pavilion, in Seattle, Wash. The Falcons captured first place in all five events with nine top-three finishes on the night, highlighted by two first-place finishes apiece from Anna Salamone and Tyler Davis.
Utah State and Air Force are meeting for the first time since Jan. 9, 2015, when the Aggies posted a 193.975-186.675 home victory. USU is 12-1 all-time against AFA, including 2-0 at home, 5-0 on the road and 5-1 at a neutral site.
Utah State has won six straight in the series. Air Force's lone victory against USU was on April 6, 2002, at the NCAA Regional Championships in Denver, Colo. The Aggies placed sixth with a 193.400, while the Falcons captured fifth with a 193.775.
Former Utah State assistant gymnastics coach and academic coordinator Andi Dolinsky-Webb is in her first season as an assistant coach at Air Force. Prior to joining the Falcons in November, she spent two-and-a-half years working with USU's student-athlete academic services (SAAS), where she was the academic coordinator for the men's and women's cross country and track & field teams, as well as women's basketball and volleyball.
Before joining SAAS, Dolinsky-Webb was an assistant coach for the Aggies from 2013-17, serving primarily as the beam coach. She was part of a coaching staff that took Utah State from a 54th RQS ranking to 36th in their first year and broke numerous individual and team records.
Utah State showed improvement in its last outing as it notched a season-high score of 194.750 at the BYU Tri Meet, held Jan. 18 at the Marriott Center in Provo. Then-No. 5 UCLA captured the tri meet with a season-high score of 197.425, while the host Cougars, ranked No. 15 in the nation, took second with a 195.875.
Ten of the Aggies' 24 routines on the night were from freshmen. Celebrating her 19th birthday at the meet,
Sofi Sullivan reached the 9.900 plateau in just the second meet of her young career, doing so on beam to tie for second. Sullivan's 9.900 on beam is tied for 15th all-time in school history.
Junior
Autumn DeHarde also had a 9.900 on beam, marking the third time she has accomplished that feat in her career. As a team, Utah State notched a season-high 48.850 on the event. Junior
Leighton Varnadore led the Aggies' efforts on vault, their final event of the evening, as she recorded a career-high 9.850 to tie for second.
DeHarde and Sullivan were named MRGC Co-Beam Specialists of the Week for their efforts last weekend, while Varnadore garnered Co-Vault Specialist of the Week accolades from the conference.
