Savon Scarver Named America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State football player Savon Scarver has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Oct. 17. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
 
With their sponsorship of the Student-Athlete of the Week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.
 
Scarver returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown the very first time he touched the ball to help the Aggies record a come-from-behind 28-24 victory over UNLV last Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
 
With his return, Scarver tied the NCAA and Mountain West record for career kickoff returns for a touchdown with seven. The Las Vegas native also set the MW record for career kickoff return yards in the game as he now has 2,649.
 
Scarver finished the game with 165 all-purpose yards as he returned three kickoffs for 156 yards and had one reception for nine yards.
 
Utah State (4-2, 2-1 MW) welcomes Mountain Division-foe Colorado State (3-3, 2-0) to Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium on Friday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m. The Aggies' annual Homecoming game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.

Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week included:
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY – Junior Camren Todd (Kaysville, Utah) was the top Aggie placer last weekend at the Wisconsin-hosted Nuttycombe Invitational as he placed ninth in the 8K championship race with a time of 23:36.2. Todd helped the Aggies finish 11th out of 32 teams, beating six teams ranked higher than them in the latest national poll.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY – Senior Katie Haviland (Lehi, Utah) was the top Aggie finisher last weekend at the Wisconsin-hosted Nuttycombe Invitational as she placed 33rd out of 267 runners with a time of 20:43.0. Haviland helped the Aggies place 13th as a team as USU defeated seven ranked opponents.

GOLF – Freshman Esteban Jaramillo (Bogota, Colombia) closed with a final-round 5-over 77 to lead Utah State's golf team to its best fall finish of the season last week at the 25th-annual CS Northridge-hosted Mark Simpson Invitational as it tied for fifth-place in the 12-team field. Jaramillo's final round included four birdies as he finished in a tie for fifth place at 2-over 218, a career low. Jaramillo led the 79-player field with 15 birdies. He also ranked third in par-4 scoring with an average of 3.97.
 
SOCCER – Junior goalkeeper Diera Walton (Draper, Utah) allowed just one goal in 220 minutes during the week as Utah State posted an 0-0-2 Mountain West record with a 0-0 double-overtime tie at Air Force and a 1-1 double-overtime tie at Colorado College. Against the Falcons, Walton logged her Mountain West-best sixth shutout of the season and recorded six saves on 18 shots. Against the Tigers, Walton recorded six saves on 16 shots and allowed just one goal. For the week, Walton totaled 12 saves in 220 minutes in goal.
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS – Senior Annaliese County (Highland, Utah) tallied Utah State's only victory in the main draw at the ITA Regionals in Las Vegas. County defeated Utah's Anastasia Goncharova in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) in the first round. In the second round, County lost in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) to the tournament's No. 6 seed, Denver's Taylor Melville.
 
VOLLEYBALL – Junior middle blocker Kennedi Boyd (Alpine, Utah) led Utah State to a 2-0 Mountain West home record last week with a 3-2 win against UNLV and a 3-0 win against San Diego State. Against the Rebels, Boyd hit .474, recording 11 kills. She added three blocks and one assist in the win. Against the Aztecs, she hit .643 with 10 kills, while leading the team with five blocks and adding one assist. On the week, Boyd hit a team-high .545 (21-3-33), averaging 2.63 kills and 1.00 blocks per set.
