EL PASO, Texas – Back from a three-week break, Utah State women's tennis (2-4) opened its weekend of competition in a 6-1 win over New Mexico State.

The victory marks the first-ever win over New Mexico State for USU in 14 all-time meetings.

"It felt really good to come out and play Aggie tennis. We were feisty and intense and we made good choices with the ball," said head coach Sean McInerney. Now we need to carry that same attitude over to UTEP tomorrow."

Utah State took the lead early, winning the doubles point. After a loss at No. 1, freshman Lisa Küng and junior Zara Ryan defeated Chloe Gavino and Bella Nguyen (6-3) at the No. 2 spot. Sophomore Carolina Millan and junior Annaliese County then clinched the point with a 6-3 win over Lucija Josipovic and Miranda Bishard at No. 3.

In singles, New Mexico State picked up its only point of the day in the No. 4 position. The remaining matches were swept by Utah State, all in straight sets. Küng got things started with a dominating win (6-0, 6-0) over Bishard at No. 3. Playing in the No. 6 spot, County defeated Josipovic (6-3, 4-1 ret.) after Josipovic retired. Dekkers clinched the match for USU, posting a win (6-4, 6-3) over Nguyen in the No. 5 spot. Millan and Ryan wrapped things up, defeating Challa (7-5, 6-2) and Gavino (7-5, 6-4), respectively.

Utah State continues action from El Paso on Sunday, March 6, taking on UTEP at 10 a.m.
