EL PASO, Texas – Utah State women's tennis (3-4) wrapped up its weekend in El Paso, Texas, Sunday, posting a 5-2 win over UTEP.
"Today was a really good team win. We put ourselves in a hole against a good UTEP team by letting the doubles point slip away. We refocused and battled our way back with really good point structure and energy in singles," said USU head coach
Sean McInerney. "We need to keep getting better, but this weekend was a good start to playing the type of tennis that will give us chances to win."
The Miners took the early lead, claiming the doubles point. The Aggies picked up one doubles win, as freshman Lisa Küng and sophomore
Zara Ryan defeated Eve Daniels and Vanessa Valdez, 6-4, in the No. 2 position.
Utah State made up its ground in singles play, quickly recording five straight-set victories to win the match. Playing at No. 1, sophomore
Carolina Millan topped Valdez in a pair of 6-1 wins. Ryan followed with a victory (7-5, 6-1) over Erani Martinez in the No. 2 spot. Küng won in the No. 3 position, defeating Lina Sachica (6-2, 6-2), while sophomore
Renata Lombera posted a victory (6-4, 6-2) over Kathleen Percegona in the No. 4 spot. Junior
Annaliese County topped Elena Dibattista (6-1, 6-3) at No. 6.
The Aggies return home now to host Weber State on Saturday, March 13. The team will then play at Idaho State on Sunday, March 14. Both matches are set to begin at 11 a.m.
