LOGAN, Utah – Utah State finished second in the Mountain West as USU student-athletes earned a total of 177 MW Scholar-Athlete honors, as announced by the league offices on Thursday. The Aggies finished second only to New Mexico, which led the league with 187 total MW Scholar-Athlete accolades.
The Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. The athletic contribution/participation requirement has been omitted for this award this year due to the impact of COVID-19.
Wyoming followed the Aggies with 162 scholar-athlete honors, while Colorado State (158) and Nevada (152) rounded out the top five. UNLV (147), Fresno State (130), Boise state (129), San Diego State (84), Air Force (78) and San José State (64) were next as affiliate members Hawaii (10) and Colorado College (8) punctuated the league total of 1,486 scholar athlete honors.
Utah State led the league in five sports as women's track & field earned a conference-best 43 scholar-athlete accolades, as did men's track & field with 30, women's cross country with 17, men's cross country with 12 and men's basketball with six. The Aggies also had double-digit honorees in football (15), women's soccer (15) and softball (11), while Utah State's total of 177 was rounded out by volleyball (8), women's basketball (7), women's tennis (5) and men's tennis and men's golf with four apiece.
Utah State had a total of 26 student-athletes on the list with a 4.0 grade point average, while 48 student-athletes carried a 3.95 or better.
During the 2020-21 academic year, Utah State garnered a total of 460 academic all-conference and/or MW Scholar-Athlete honors.
