ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Utah State men's tennis continued their stellar showing at the ITA Mountain Region Championships on Saturday as the Aggies will be represented in the semifinals of both tournaments at the event. Seniors David Cierny and Bodin Zarkovic will play for a spot in the doubles championship match while Cierny and sophomore Sergi Micó Fenollar will face off in the semifinals of the singles tournament.
In doubles action, seniors David Cierny and Bodin Zarkovic won twice on Saturday to reach the semifinals. The Aggie duo defeated UNLV's Jackson Atherton and Anton Ornberg, 8-3, before taking out Northern Arizona's Dominik Buzonics and Alexander Groves, 8-5, in the quarterfinal round. USU's other entrant in the doubles tournament, junior Stijn Paardekooper and sophomore Sergi Micó Fenollar, had their tournament come to an end in an 8-4 loss to Air Force's Justin Waldman and Nick Vroman.
In singles play, Cierny and Micó Fenollar will meet in the semifinal round after each notched wins in the quarterfinals. Cierny defeated Montana State's Matej Panik, 6-3, 6-4, while Micó Fenollar took out the tournament's No. 1 seed, Utah's Franco Capalbo, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5). Zarkovic narrowly missed out on making it three Aggies in the final four, falling to Utah's Geronimo Busleiman, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, in the quarterfinal round.
Cierny and Micó Fenollar will meet in the semifinals with a spot in the championship match on the line tomorrow. Cierny and Zarkovic will also face Utah's Berk Bugarikj and Patrick Trhac for a berth in the doubles championship match.
