ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – Utah State men's tennis senior
David Cierny became only the second Aggie in program history to reach the finals at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships on Sunday.
In an all-Aggie matchup in the semifinals of the singles draw, Cierny emerged victorious over sophomore Sergi Micó Fenollar, 6-1, 6-1. The two players joined fellow senior
Bodin Zarkovic and former Aggie Kai Wehnelt as the only Aggies to reach the semifinals of the singles draw at the ITA Regionals. Zarkovic reached the semifinals last season.
Cierny also joins Wehnelt as the only players from Utah State to advance to the finals of the ITA Regional Championships. No Aggie has ever won the tournament.
In doubles play, Cierny and Zarkovic saw their tournament run end in the semifinals in a three-set loss to Utah's Berk Bugarikj and Patrick Trhac, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). The semifinal run stands as the deepest run in the doubles draw at the ITA Regionals by an Aggie duo in program history.
Cierny will face Utah's Geronimo Busleiman in the singles championship match on Monday at 10:30 a.m. (MT).
